From: "Alfie Rufino" <obsigame@globe.com.ph> Subject: Mobil 1 for gear oil?! Date: Tue, 1 Jul 1997 18:05:30 -0500
Hello everyone, Reptile's due for a manual transmission and rear differential gear oil change. I understand that the proper lubricants to use are SAE 75w-90 and SAE 90 respectively. I gave Mobil Philippines a call to check on the prices for the synthetic versions (for my piece of mind) of the said lubricants and got a very unusual response. They suggested that instead of using the said lubricants, it would be better to just use Mobil 1 SAE 15w-50 synthetic engine oil for both the tranny and differential. I use the stuff for my engine due to increased loads from the SC, but for the drivetrain?! They mentioned that this would provide even slicker shifting. I am aware that some other car manufacturers (Honda Phils.) and mechanics recommend the same thing. Any thoughts on this? Reptile usually goes out in 95+ degree weather, won't the oil break down from the heat? Another thing, which is a higher standard, GL-4 or GL-5? Thank you all!
