In an open-type differential (normal) If one wheel spins when you accelerate the other wheel will sit still causing slower start speeds and poor high-speed cornering during acceleration. The LSD transfers power back and forth smoothly if either of the wheels start to spin. In effect neither wheel will spin unless they both spin which is harder to do.
