From: Tony Schreiber <dune@thenet.net> Subject: New Suspension Results (No Hammer) Date: Tue, 2 Sep 1997 11:03:02 +0000
Thanks to all who gave me suggestions regarding the big hammer, but it just never seemed to work. What did work, and I hope Bill doesn't tell me that I ruined my suspension, was to use a crowbar. ;) I just edged it into the space between the upper A arm and the knuckle added a little pressure and POP! out came the joint. This raised a few questions in my mind. 1) How does it go back in? I mean just tightening it back up puts it back together? 2) On the other side after my joyous success with the crowbar method (after a couple hours of failure with the hammer) I was a little overzealous and managed to put a little nick the joint boot. How long before I have to replace this? 3) I managed to forget (on both the front and the rears) to reinstall that little sheet of plastic that was on the tops of all the shock mounts. Is this a big deal? Once I got everything back down on the ground and torqued, I admired the look. Very sexy. It's an inch lower on all four corners and my 205/50/15's fill the wheel well perfectly. They're not slammed up in there or anything, they just fit VERY nice. No bumping, scraping or anything like that. Not even close actually. This whole install took me about 6 hours. If you take out the initial frustration regarding the hammer, it really only took 4. The rears are super easy except for getting to the top bolts behind the fuel tank lines. The next day I took it for the alignment. Miq specs. (Maybe someday my name will become ubiquitous with some Miata adjustment ;) Then I finally _drove_ it. I still haven't really hammered it into any corners, but man is it lovely. I certainly "feel" the road a bit more. But it's not excessive. On a drive out for dinner last night, my wife said it felt rougher, but not objectinably so. But it is flat and tight and very very nice. Go cart. Total Absence of Body Roll. (at least as far as I've ever known) ;) So, I am happy.
