I'll try to answer a couple of your questions:  All Miatas of a given

year have the same basic wiring, including the defroster wiring,

IMNSHO.  My '94 R package came with the basic wiring for the hardtop

defroster (I added a hardtop when I bought the car and the dealerhip put

in whatever additional components were needed), and it must have had a

timer somewhere because it off automtically after X minutes (see your

owner's manual).
