I've never used AOL chat rooms (cancelled after my free hours were 

up, several years ago) but there are other purposes for chat rooms:  

People who don't have enough real friends offline can form online 

friendships, not just love-interests; people who are into a 

particular hobby---quilting, gardening, um....MIATAS can get together 

and just waste time shooting the breeze.  Hey, some people get into 

thst stuff.  I'm not flaming you, I just don't want to see a large 

group of people painted with the same brush.

OK, my mom is a good example here:  She is a serious professional.  

Literally one of the top people in her field (marine science and 

conservation).  She uses AOL because she took the time to learn 

how to check her e-mail on that system, and simply isn't willing 

(or maybe even able) to devote the energy and time required to get 

oriented to a whole new way of doing things.  Sure, there are things 

about AOL that make her crazy, but she's unlikely to make a change 

any time soon.  She's never used a newsgroup, chat room, or AOL 

forum, and could probably count the number of times she's visited the 

web on one hand.  The e-mail service she gets plainly sucks compared 

to what she could get, and for less money, but her professional 

commitments are so great that she's unlikely to initiate a change.  

The point is, some professionals use AOL because it's easier than 

switching, and they've got better things to do.  Too bad the system 

was never designed with their needs in mind.

FWIW, my mom feels the same way.  If I could persuade her to switch I 

would, but I don't see it happening anytime soon.
