you could set up a trip flare!    sure,  it wouldn't actually deter the

thieves, but, having a flare go off suddenly 10 feet away would

certainly get me running, if I were a thief that is.  Army training

taught me to stop and drop for surface flares (IIRC, been some time

since I did that stuff)



seems you could get some, fairly inexpensively, at a local surplus

store!
