The missing 1/2" results from the rough 2X4 (which measures 2"X4") being planed down at the mill so we won't get slivers in our fingers.... Upon metrification, the humble 2X4 became known as 38X89, mm that is, which are the actual dimensions. We still often refer to them as 2 by 4's....
