At least, that's what I've decided from the various information available. The further the timing is advanced, the more low end torque you'll get. But your engine will need higher octane, and you'll start to lose on the top end. 18 degrees may have more torque than the more usual 14, but it also loses out on the upper end of the rev range. 21 would go further that way - probably more torque, but your engine will not be happy revving at all.
