I'll take a car that's rusted out after 14 years over the number of accidents that would have occurred if the salt hadn't been put on the roads over that time! IMHO (and I do LOVE my cars) the safety of ice-free roads is far more valuable than the amount of damage that the cars sustain from the salt.
