From: Keith Tanner <keith@miata.net> Subject: DOT-approved vs. race slicks? Date: Fri, 2 Jan 1998 18:45:14 +0000
I'm thinking of entering the local autox competitions seriously next year. Through various connections, I have the possibility of getting either Goodyear race slicks for a good price or some Yokohama autox tires in a 205/50-13 size that are DOT legal for a great price. So, which would be better suited to autocrossing? I understand the pure race tires will probably stickier, but may not stand up to the heat cycling of autocrossing well. The DOT Yokos are autox tires, and apparantly too hard for full track use (they were supposed to be used for a Neon-engined open wheel race series around here). I'd like the tires to last a whole season if possible, as I'm not that excited about pouring money into single-day tires. It also turns out I might be able to get a good deal on some BBS wheels too.
