Sonja is absolutely correct about the polarity, but it's an easy fix; just rotate the battery 180 degrees to put the negative terminal nearest the inside of the right rear fender. The larger issue, IMHO, is that the stock Miata battery cable clamps didn't fit my WestCo terminals very snugly, so I replaced them with tapered clamps from an auto parts store. Those fit perfectly. And as Sonja says, anything may have been corrected (or messed up further) in later production. My WestCo was bought in March, '95.
