Craig: I've owned three Miatas; two with power and one with manual steering, and I much prefer the manual. I now have a '92 yellow, and yellows all came with power steering. I'm going to switch to manual. It's apparently pretty easy and should cost about $300, excluding (my own) labor. Your only sacrifice with a base model may be an LSD. Miatas do have a notchy second gear (chalk it up to character), which improves with Redline MTL. Their synchros are fine and I've never heard of any problems. Very robust trannies. Miatas are among the most reliable cars on the road. Every car magazine agrees and I've never been stranded. Every time I work on (tune up or upgrade, never repair) the car I admire its quality and elegance of engineering. In SCCA racing they've shown their mettle, endurance-wise, time and time again. You won't be sorry. Eric Amador L.A.
