I think it's a great idea. And I believe I told Bob that when he suggested
it.

IIRC Bob's original idea included his ability to leave Florida, go to the
convention, and continue on to the west coast. It may be this end purpose
that some at MCA or ?Texas saw as a threat???

As long as the feat were planned as independant legs in and back out with
published itineraries, an individual could come in on any leg and go out on
any other to complete 'their' chosen trek across America ( NYC - LA, Miami
- Seattle, Miami - LA, etc). This shouldn't cause ANYONE to lose any sleep
about taking away from the central event. In fact, they should see it as
an opportunity to offer a 'XXX Across America' that could NOT be rivaled by
anything NOT PLANNED AROUND A NATIONAL

As far as some of the particulars...
1) Establish a number of routes (legs)
2) Divide each route up into reasonable segments ( ie - not force 900 mile
days but then avoid 200 mile days)
3) Identitfy and recruit local clubs/individuals that would take
responsibilty for each leg
4) These people/entities would need to locate and identify places to stay
at each endpoint (theirs)... to nclude a range of motels/hotels,
campgrounds, private homes that could/would host participants as well as
places to stop for food, fuel, and if necessary repairs)
5) In conjunction with step 4, someone would have to be kept informed
of/track those participating and feed that information back to the groups
responsible for each leg segment..

Gee, does it sound like a task for an entity like MCA????????????? and the
ready, willing, and able locals...
