Just curious:
Why would anyone want to shorten the shifter anyway?  I've got a Voodoo knob
and think if the shifter is any shorter, it would be a helluva lot harder to
shift quickly.  No leverage and the shift boot would probably get in the way.
 With Voodoo in place, short throw and shifting precision are about perfect. 
It's a bit stiff with 140K miles on the car now (got Redline), but still the
best I've driven except for mabye my '86 MR2.
