The May issue of Automobile Magazine reports that Mazda officials
have approved the launch of a new small car in 1999 that will have the
rotary engine without a turbo. This may be the production version of the
RX-01 that was seen on the auto show circuit two years ago. (It was also
on the cover of Road & Track).
Many people in the U.S. don't realize that the RX-7 is still produced
in Japan and is exported to Australia and perhaps elsewhere. I have the
sales catalog for the 1998 Japanese RX-7. The RX-7 needs a successor.
This is a very happy development! It makes a positive statement
about Ford's involvement in Mazda. Ford has done wonders for Jaguar, who
is building world-class cars now. Maybe Mazda will have a bright future
with innovative and interesting cars, including real sports cars! Could
there even be a rotary model of a Miata coupe in the future?
