Things i've put in the trunk are coming out smelling faintly of gas or some
other chemical.

I popped off the interior around the gas cap, pipes, etc. and pulled off the
metal plate.  Oddly enough it really doesn't smell of gas here..  I've run
paper towels along the pipes and they don't smell particularly either.

I also checked the battery and there is no sign of fluid leakage, etc.

Of course now that i've aired out the trunk, i can't narrow it down at all.

Any ideas?
