First, let me say that I own a '97 PEP with Torsen Limited Slip and I love
it! My Miata was my daily driver all winter long here in Utah ("greatest
snow on earth") and I *never* got stuck or slid out of control. I did drive
intelligently, however. Of course, I don't have 30k miles on it yet.
Second, when I bought the car, several people with whom I work were impressed
that the Miata had a Torsen LSD because they all agreed it was vastly
superior to the viscous type. I was told by them (I claim no personal
knowledge here!) that the Torsen LSD was a gear-type LSD and provided much
more power redirection than the viscous type. It shouldn't wear out any
faster than the standard differential.
I hope that helps some.
