Plugs and wires, I dunno. But I've advanced the timing on every vehicle 
I've owned since 1971 until it pinged, then backed off a degree or so 
(did it by ear), with consistently good results. I advanced the 1980 
Accord about 10 degrees past stock!

The exception would be any car with a knock sensor (none of mine had 
one), which does the same thing automatically, several times per second.
