I have had a similar experience but I don't know if it 
converts to Miata.  The exact same noise came from my Ford 
truck all the time.  The dealer never did fix it.  A 
neighbor finally told me it was a dry spline on the 
driveshaft that couldn't telescope smoothly.  After it was 
lubed it never did it again.  Jerry

avail.  I would appreciate any help you may be able to 
provide.

I have a '97 base - since January this year.  I have had it 
in the dealer
twice for a  LOUD hollow sounding "thunk" that is coming 
from the rear of the
car.  It is not the parking break or the spare tire.  The 
dealer (of course)
"could not duplicate".  It seams to be happening more 
often.  It is a similar
sound to that if I just tap the floor of the trunk.  It 
usually happens after
the car has been sitting for a while and after I just start 
to move.  If
anyone has had a similar experience or can offer 
suggestions please do so.
