| Subject: | SMOG test almost failed |

I went in to get the test done this morning, drove up the freeway 20 miles
so the engine was good and hot. Well during the pretest the CO read over 3%
& the Check Engine light came on! This is the first time the light has come
on in 9 years except at startup! It went out as soon as the engine dropped
back to idle. Anyway we continued through the test and at the end the CO
was reading way under the maximum of 1%. So the mechanic ran the test again
with no problems. Any ideas as to why the light came on?
The CA smog test requires a continuous 3 min high rpm (about 2500) run and
it was during that when the light came on and the CO went skyward. The
mechanic thinks that the ecu got a little confused with high rpm and no
speed signal. I watched the Check Engine light and it never came on again
today.
Oh, another thing: the CARB certification sticker that Jackson Racing
included with the CAI two years ago was questioned. Seems the sticker says
"ARB" and not "CARB" Also the JR headers were questioned, but fortunately I
have a copy of the letter the CARB sent JR with the certification # on it.
This was a new test station as the one I've gone to the last four years
went out of business.
Miataly,
Dennis
