Congratulations to the Imports (Mazda, of course) winning by FOUR CAR
LENGTHS over the "DOMESTICONS" (that's how my the younger generation -
nieces and nephews call them, and of course the winner is called
"IMPORTABOTS").   I think this is relative to an old-time cartoon tv show.

BTW, a second generation RX-7, in the 9.4 quarter mile range was the winner.
I'd say: technology, availability/wider range of parts, power to weight
ratio, budget? and...  skill?   Awesome collections of cars...  500hp
averages!!!
