Michelle,
The dealer can read the code in the engine computer and tell what caused the
light to come on.  Disconnecting the battery for a few seconds will clear
the code and the light will go off.  I would do that once and see if the
code reoccurs.  If it does, then take it to the dealer for a diagnosis.
On earlier cars it is possible to read the codes by putting a jumper in the
TEN and GND pins of the diagnostic connector and the engine light will flash
the code.  The codes are described in the garage section of Miata.net.  I do
not know if the codes are the same for the '99, but if you have a paper clip
handy, you might want to try it.  Since your car is still under warranty,
though, I'd just let it be the dealer's problem.
