It's not necessarily the time, it's mostly the money. We are car-less 
at the moment, friends all have no car or A/T's, and winter is coming 
on (again).

I'd have to rent a standard, a feat in itself, and (no offense to my SO) I'd 
rather take lessons from a professional teacher than absorb 
potentially bad habits from the SO.

Which all costs $$$

I'd rather put the $$$ into the cost of whatever Miata I can afford 
in spring, even if it's the basic model (hold the goodies...)
