Prepare to be horrified... it's $300 because they hate you for having
bought the car elsewhere, plus the registration. Don't know what the
formula is, but my '93 just paid a bit over $200. So, figure about
$600-$700 or thereabouts just to register it. Not including the smog
check. Also... technically you have 10 days from the instant you
breathe CA air to do this whole process, or they charge you HUGE
penalties. Unless you have nothing to do after you move in, this is
clearly not realistic, so make sure to adjust dates accordingly when
you fill in the forms.
As for insurance, well.. I moved to CA from NJ, which is widely
maligned to be the most expensive insurance state. Turns out CA was
far, FAR more expensive than NJ, for me anyway. It is beyond nuts.
