In most cases, this is due to the alignement slowly getting whacked out of
specs and the tires adapting to this with slightly uneven wear.
Once you put on new tires, the problem shows up, but will be masked again by
uneven tire wear if left alone.
I would say get a good alignment ASAP - the steering wheel will be straight
after that. And you will notice even better handling.
In my experience, alignment once a year is the minimum.
Of course, just a guess from some thousand miles away ...
