Ingrid,

Check your brake pads.  It sounds like you might be down the "squealer".
This is a little do-dah that is designed to contact the rotor and make a
terrible squealing sound when the brake pad reaches its service limit.  It
functions by freaking the owner out and sending him/her immediately to a
mechanic who inspects and replaces the brake pads.
