Hate to say it Jonathan, but it sounds like the dreaded Light Weight Sports
Crankshaft nose is decaying.  If you didn't already know about this
possibility, check out http://www.miata.net/garage/crankshaft.html
This has tons of info on this problem.

I hope this is not the case though!
