I'll defer to Vbob wrt the identification of the material.  I can say that
I have used the type of cover you describe on my dad's airplane.  He uses
it when the airplane is parked outside to keep sunlight out.  The material
breaths which allows moisture to evaporate from underneath it.  The only
problem I've seen is that after a few years out in the sun it degrades and
begins to tear.
