FYI:
At about 50k, my '94 would start making significant HLA noise at about 2.5k
miles or so after an oil change, synthetic or not, particularly on a hot
start. I used the Amsoil engine flush treatment, and I haven't had a
problem since - it runs nice and quiet, even at 3k miles after an oil change
(running synthetic) on a hot start. But I only have about 60k on the motor
now, so I don't know about the longevity of the fix.
Before you replace the engine, you might try flushing the engine first.
YMMV, especially on a higher-mileage engine.
