i've written a number of posts on the 1.8 swap, which are now in the archives.
Even now, some months after the fact, I couldn't be happier. The swap can be
done for close to what you are spending on a new set of lifters. Plus, the
lifters alone won't cure the smoke, which sounds like valve guides. For a
short term fix, you might switch back to dino oil, since this will probably at
least reduce smoke and consumption, and frankly, the lifter noise while
annoying, won't hurt anything.
