Subject:Mirror glass replacement

Somehow the glass of my passenger side mirror got broken. I expect a
neighbor kid with a rock or bb-gun. But...I went to a glass and mirror
shop to get a replacement piece of glass. They said they had it, so I
trotted home with the glass. It appeared the correct shape, but it was
not so easy. They told me the glass they gave me was the only size glass
I could buy. They said if I took my mirror back to Mazda I would get the
same size glass and Mazda would have the same problem that I now have.
The glass was over sized. It would not fit back in the little black
holder in the mirror. If you look at your mirror you will see a little
lip of black plastic holding the mirror in place. They told me what I
would have to do is fill the black plastic holder that held the original
mirror with silicon and then tape my new glass in place until the
silicone dried. The glass will then stay. This sounds hokey to me. Has
anyone else had to replace the glass on their mirror? If so, what did
you do? Do you think I could take the glass someplace and have it ground
or cut to fit in the plastic holder. Even if it is very slightly
undersized so the plastic holder does not secure it, I feel it will hold
the glass in place better than their suggestion. I would have to still
silicone it in place, but I would feel it would be more secure.

Be sure to reply to me as I had to quit the list as I could not keep up
with all the email no matter how fun it was to read.
