I've actually had the experience of racing straight-line the VTEC Del Sol.
It was late at night here in Austin on some wide open roads (Parmer Blvd,
for you locals) and i was just kinda having fun with a Boxster who wasn't
really pushing his car, obviously. then at the next street light a VTEC
Del Sol shows up and wants to race me. (by this time, the boxster had
turned off)
i didn't think about racing him so i let him take off. he "beat" me off
the line the first time and got cocky so at the next light i thought i'd
give him a run for his money to see how the M2 would do. well...i pulled
on him hard. we were even in 1st, i pulled away slowly in 2nd and by 3rd,
i was a full car length on him. the only upgrade he had on his car was
the exhaust, but mine was stock. he couldn't believe it and at the next
stoplight he asked what i had under the hood. i told him it was stock and
just a 4-cylinder. he was shocked and said that he usually takes Miatas
easily. well, we went at it again and he couldn't keep up AGAIN.
perhaps he had a faulty VTEC? i dunno. the M2s are not slow off the line.
