That is indeed the case. I suggest that you contact Mazda
Australia http://www.mazda.com.au , you might be able to order the badge
you want. I have one in my armrest/console but the pins are broken, besides
it's from my '99 and is a different size.

Am I correctly understanding that in Australia, the badge on the rear of the
car says MX5 and not Miata? Do they resemble each other? i.e. The inside of
the Miata badge is red on mine. If so, how can I get one. I would replace
my Miata badge with an MX5 badge. My License plate reads REDMX5, and I am
tired of people asking me what RED Mix 5 means. I have to point to the
little bitty wording that says Mazda MX5.
