Subject:Stereo Mod Update: Bazookas in tunnels
Date: Thu, 3 Jun 1999 09:20:15 -0400

Well, it has been about 3 weeks now and everything is
working just fine with the 2 5.25" Bazooka Tubes in
the rear tunnels. I wanted the system to be totally
hidden from any "evil-doers" out there and I think
this goal has been accomplished. There are some
updates concerning the spare tire relocation and new
R-pkg trunk torsion spring (as far as I know, this
stereo mod only applies to the M1 Miata):

To recap, I have mounted two 5.25" Bazooka Tubes on
each side of the gas tank (in the rear tunnels),
hence, using minimal space in the trunk. I think I
have proven some doubts on if they will fit or
not....they do in fact fit quite well(only in the
5.25" size).

With the stock stereo, aftermarket amp & door
speakers, and EQ, the sound is incredible. Even at
highway speeds, the bass is all there, and not too
much to bother the police, etc. I think the key
ingredient is that you need a nice amp as well as some
nice door speakers to help fill out the mid bass/mid
range.

I am also using a small Kenwood EQ (hidden in glove
box) that acts like a small sub/out crossover.

Because of the tubes, I had to forgo the newly
installed trunk lift kit and the spare had to be
slightly moved towards the center of the trunk.
Here's how that was done:

1) The spare was easily relocated about 3" via simple
wood and carpet material. Total cost - $5.50

2) With the trunk lift kit gone, the OEM torsion
spring was just not doing the job with holding up the
trunk and rear spoiler well. With a simple call to
Roebuck, I bought for $15 the R-pkg torsion spring and
it works like a charm! Holds that trunk high in the
air like a flag of victory. No more will my head be
used to prop open that piece of finely crafted steel
when looking for a cd, etc.

Anyway, follow my home page link below for pictures
and detailed install notes. I'll be at Gap '99 this
year, so if anyone is interested in hearing it, you
can see the mods first hand. Looks like quite a few
of you are on your way to a great improvement on your
current sound system! Good luck.
