It's true: The basic Miata design isn't antique; it's ageless.
I'm probably pushing my luck by comparing it to the look of another
love-it-or-hate-it car with a number of similar timeless design elements:
the second-generation Corvair.
Both cars rely on balanced proportions and graceful compound curves instead
of spoilers, vents, fins, Cruiserline Ventiports or other design
histrionics.
The Corvair suffered by virtue of its birth in the Age of Chrome, but a
late-model hardtop with double-link suspension, front spoiler, some flares
and the 140- or 180-horse engine was a thing of beauty, as well as a swell
way to haul ass.
You're probably not all that eager to be driving the "Corvair of the '90s,"
but design lines don't lie. Except for the Lotus Elan, what car comes closer
to the look and feel of the Miata? / Roadburn
