I'm gonna jump in to defend David here - he's a friend of mine, and not the
kind of meathead you might think he is :)  

Those hard plastic covers are usually very easy to remove.  The ones on our
Subaru are - and a good thing, too, as they really cut down light output
even though they're clear.  During the daytime, there's nothing wrong with
running tinted covers.  Knowing David's preferences, he'd want lots of
light for the nighttime.

You could probably tint them with regular window tinting film.  The covers
sold by Dealer Alt aren't hard plastic, though.  They're not meant to be
removed - if I understood Teri's description correctly, they're adhesive
sheets that work as a second skin instead of a hard shell....
