Simon, where are you located? Here in the US you can still
get R13 systems serviced. Just had my truck done, the R13
is getting expensive ($3/oz) but the service center said
they had no problems getting it. Just make sure they
correct the underlying problem. Probably all of the o-rings
have dried out and need to be replaced. Possibly the drier
if the system has been empty for any length of time.

Subject: air conditioner replacement?

Hello all,
I own a 90 Miata with the AC option and after
10 years and no recharge, I have the merest
trickle of cool air (Notice I didn't say cold)
coming out. No recharge is available (new eco rules),
so I need a replacement.
The unit always whined when it came on anyway.
This was a known problem documented in some Miata Mag issue
in the golden age of white red blue packages, when Miata
Mania
was at its peak and you were happy to pay 2000 above sticker
price. Something about how the valve let the air out.
Anyway I need a replacement.
I don't want to refit the old one to use friendlier gasses
because I hate the whine.
Mazda tell me today's AC unit won't fit the 90.
Any ideas?
