Lisa,

You don't ever get out of first on your commute? :) 
Seriously, especially if you're going to autocross,
you should get out and hit the rev limiter.  Maybe not
on your own residential street, but stop in a deserted
mall parking lot (good for something!), put it in
first, launch at ~4500 rpm (whee!!!  a little squeal
and smoke, then Spike will hook up and take your
breath away) and let Spike bang against his leash a
few times.  You don't want the first time it happens
to be a big surprise.

At my last autocross event, because of the course
design I rode the limiter in first 3x per run x 5
runs.  I didn't worry at all about my baby being hurt
because of it.
