Subject:Help! Tranny noises!
Date: Thu, 2 Sep 1999 15:05:19 -0400

After I returned from the Gap, the transmission started making REALLY BAD
noises. My diagnosis is that the problem is most likely the synchros.

Symptoms:
There is no noise while the car is in gear and moving with the clutch out. If
I pull up to a stop, when I push the clutch in the tranny starts howling! If I
pull it to neutral, the noise will sometimes stop. If I put it in neutral and
let the clutch out the noise always stops. At this point I can put it back in
first with the clutch in and wait for the light to change without making a lot
of racket!

The noise is like a grinding. The image I get from the noise is a bad bearing
or two rotating shafts grinding together. I'm guessing synchros rather than
bearings because the noise comes and goes.

Any thoughts? Any guesses as to how much to have synchros repaired? How much
for parts? Is this fixable by a reasonably competent do-it-yourselfer?

Thanks,
Jeff
