I use that type cup holder too, but mount it a little different on my
M1's with power windows.

For my M1's I pull the flexible rubber part out of the cup holder's slot
and discard it. Then I just shove the top of the plastic cup holder up
under the car's door sill -- done, installed, that's all there is to
mount it.

The bar at the top of the cup holder that's made to hold the rubber
hanger snaps in nicely to mount the cup holder into a position above
your knee. The cup holder's bar snaps in over the top of the backing
board that's used to mount the door's covering material and holds the
cup holder well.

This places your cup in front of the dash's air vent and that can be
used to help keep your drink hot or cold. I've not seen a cup holder in
a Miata that looks or works better than this set up does.

Although I leave mine always installed, they can be removed -- stick
your finger tips up under the sill to wedge it away from the door and
then pull the cup holder down and out.

Lately I've not been able to find the Rubber Queen cup holders in black,
so I spray painted a dark color one black.
