Without getting into the fire, again, let me say that the highways are NOT 
your **playground**.  Yes we all pay for them, but not for playing 
around.  Testing the limits of your car in an uncontrolled environment is 
placing other people who also pay for the privilege of driving on our 
highways, in danger.  Accidents normally just don't happen, they are caused 
and if you can minimize the causes, then there will be less accidents, and 
conversely, if you increase the causes, like unsuspected loss of control 
while testing limits, then there will be more accidents.

The autocross courses and tracks provide a controlled environment (to a 
certain degree) that at least minimizes the possibility of other people 
doing the same thing as you at the same time in the same place.
