| Subject: | High-temp brake fluid (and Mt. Hamilton hijinks) |
| Date: | Wed, 2 Feb 2000 00:11:16 -0500 |
Today I got off work at a reasonable time (2:45 p.m.;
btw I start work at 6:00 a.m.) so I decided to do a
Mt. Hamilton run. I did this partly because it's a
lot of fun, but mainly to see how my recently
installed Axxis brake pads would work.
Well, in short, they are a HUGE improvement over my
OEM pads. The last time I did this run on the stock
pads, about halfway down I wound up pulling off the
road to give the brakes some time to cool off. The
Axxis pads work well enough when cold, but when they
warmed up, it was like dropping an anchor! Even
though the pedal was getting spongy after a while, the
brakes still hauled the car down very well. (That
smell is something else, though; made my eyes water!)
Now that brings me to my question. Since I'm changing
all the other fluids in my car, what do you folks
recommend for brake fluid? Right now I just have
standard DOT 3/4 fluid in the car. I've heard
silicon-based fluid offers good heat resistance, but
how is it for day-to-day living?
As I mentioned above, the brakes still work fine;
they'll stop the car quickly if need be, and still
modulate okay. I'm mostly looking for better pedal
feel.
Thanks,
Scot
