If my conversion is correct that's about 1200 pounds.  I would be
uncomfortable towing that much weight with a Miata for a few reasons. 
The hitches are rated at 1000 for a start.   it is more than half the
weigh of the tow vehicle and since it is not a vehicle designed
specifically to tow the brakes etc. aren't up to the added load.

As far as the zero from Mazda, its a legal cover your ass attitude.

I tow and lots of people tow small trailers for carry tires to the
track.  At national events you see people with small trailer that carry
their luggage.  Yes the Miata tows small trailers fine.
