i use a sports bag as well.  it has the added advantage over the shelf
luggage that it fits with the roll bar and is narrow enough that it doesn't
sit on top of the folded rear window.  i am also able to use the top boot by
putting it on before loading the sports bag.

and yes... it makes a great wind blocker.  i hadn't considered trying to
change the car's weight distribution by adding wine to the trunk.  perhaps
next trip...
