Mike,

Both good points but not always practical.

There is a finite distance that you can spread the lights apart and
still get reliable readings.  As far as not having the finish line after
a turn, also not always possible.  If there is a space problem after the
finish one of the ways to control exit speed is to have either turns or
a slalom before the finish line.  We are not usually blessed with enough
space to have a large shutdown after the exit so we usually end up using
a slalom to help control exit speed.
