I might be overcareful, but, as frequent oil changes are perhaps the single
best thing that one can do for the health of one's engine, I would stand by
the 3K standard.
I have no doubt that manufacturer's recommendations might vary from the
above, but I see no reason to skimp on a fairly easy maintenance routine. I
change filter every other oil change and stick to Mazda OEM filters
pre-filled with oil before installation as a precaution againt lifter noise
at startup.
Note that mileage is not the only criterion for oil chnages, but also your
driving habite. Frequent short trips or underusage of the car might require
amending the 3000 K miles interval to a more frequent one, maybe based on
time elapsed.
