No, I don't think this is an El Niño,

I got the ñ on my Sun Solaris machine by holding the key with the
  diamond on it while hitting 'q'. I wouldn't count on this working on
  other types of computers. 
  
Especially those that don't have a key with a diamond on it. :)

With all the discussion of how to make the ¥ symbol (diamond-shift-5 on
  mine), I started poking around and found all sorts of symbols. Of
  course, there's no guarantee that they'll display properly on other
  machines, or other fonts, so it's probably best not to overuse them.
